Saturday Happened

I'll be honest with you. Two people signed up for the First Gathering. I was going to show up anyway. Jim and I were going to have a good conversation, whether the room was full or empty.

Then Karen walked in with Jim.

Three chairs. Three stories. Three people at completely different points in their AI journey — all at the same table.

Karen works in the legal field. She came in with a real concern. A legitimate one. AI is reshaping law fast, and she wanted to know what that meant for her.

By the time we left, she wasn't worried anymore. She was curious.

Here's what changed it.

We talked about what it actually means for a human to stay in the loop. Not as a platitude. As a practical reality. In law. In business. In every field where judgment, relationship, and accountability still matter. A human mind and heart should always guide AI, not the other way around.

AI doesn't replace the person who understands context, reads the room, and takes responsibility for the outcome.

It never will.

Jim left seeing more clearly how AI can assist what he already does well. Do not replace it. Multiply it.

And I left reminded of why the porch exists.

Not to talk about AI in the abstract. But to sit across from real people carrying real concerns and work through them together.

One hour turned into ninety minutes.

Nobody noticed until it was over.

That's the right length for a Gathering. Long enough to get somewhere real. Short enough that nobody feels trapped. Light enough that you leave energized instead of exhausted.

You've got other things to do. So do I. But for ninety minutes on a Saturday in Woodstock, three people figured some things out together.
